I want to write a lengthy diatribe about "poverty," but I don't have time right now. Fortunately, Robert Rector wrote this destined-to-be-a-classic piece a couple of years ago.
I have plenty to say that Rector hasn't covered, but for now his Heritage Foundation article is still a great review for those who've already seen it, and a great read for those who want to see America's "problems" in perspective.
