In this post, I explained that a truly poorer country is not defined by its having fewer people with money, but rather by having fewer things worth buying.
News reports are indicating that 70% of Cadillac dealerships have lost their franchises. There are fewer Cadillacs for a new, poorer America to buy. Dealers of all brands must now find ways to make their lots look less barren in the face of shrinking inventory. Our new car business resembles the third world a little more every day.
I regularly drive past a former Pontiac dealership. Where the lot was once covered with new Pontiacs and GMC trucks, the dealer's new inventory now consists of bizarre-looking three-wheeled vehicles having more in common with Cushman golf carts than with traditional automobiles. The Smart Car is starting to look decadent.
The US is a poorer country already.
